Self-evaluation, ultimate purpose of student evaluation
IT IS a happy news for many innovative schools that the class X board examination have been scrapped by the CBSE. Now such schools can have their curricula and evaluation system that could be diagnostic and formative.

Many educators and pedagogues believe that since students are an integral part of teaching โ learning- evaluation continuum, they need to be made aware of their capabilities or adequacies as well as difficulties or inadequacies as learners through self-evaluation. It is to be borne in mind that the difficulties and inadequacies are the natural part of learning and life.
As Casta, an educational researcher puts it, โWe must constantly remind ourselves that the ultimate purpose of evaluation is to enable students evaluate themselves. Educators may have been practising the skill to the exclusion of learners; we need to shift a part of the responsibility to the students. Fostering studentโs ability to direct and redirect themselves must be a major goal - or whatโs education for!โ
According evaluation experts E Earl and JB Cousins, even very young children can and do and use feedback to make adjustments to their learning and go to the next stage. It is also evident that self-evaluation makes children honest about themselves and enhances their self-concept as capable person who benefit from feedback for self-improvement.
In the light of the academic freedom and evaluation autonomy offered by the CBSE to the schools, it will be worthwhile for the schools to go for the self-referenced criterion evaluation since all learning in its ultimate sense is an individualized act that takes place in the social setting of institutions.
