Depressed medical student hangs himself
An MBBS student of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) hanged himself in his hostel room following depression due to poor performance in exams and social discrimination. Anil Kumar Meena, 22, who hailed from Rajasthan's Baran district, a first year student of AIIMS was found dead in his room on 4th March, reported Deccan Herald.
According to a Hindustan Times report, Kumar didn't clear the first year exam as well as internal examinations. He was also having problems with attendance and was therefore not promoted. He also had problems in following lectures in English, informed Chhaya Sharma, deputy commissioner of police (south).
According to the police report, when his friends did not hear from him on Sunday morning, they called the security guard to check. On breaking the door to his room, he was found hanging from the ceiling fan. He was rushed to the emergency ward of AIIMS where he was declared brought dead. Apart from his poor performance in studies, another reason that most likely drove him to take the ultimate step was because of the arbitrary system at AIIMS. A student expressed his anger on HT and alleged that the institute announced a change in the marking system last year after the exams were over. Earlier, students were allowed to repeat the exams without wasting an academic year, which was also changed recently. Thus, Anil remained a first year student even though this was his second year in the institute.
There is a whiff of cast discrimination as few students claim that suicide by reserved category students may not a coincidence. Following the suicide, more than over 200 students protested in front of the AIIMS director, Dr RC Deka's residence demanding his immediate resignation. (Read more...)
