Grant Medical College: Producing Good Doctors Over The Years
The Grant Medical College and Sir J.J. Group of Hospitals is a premier medical institution of India under the Government of Maharashtra. Sir Robert Grant (1780-1838) on becoming Governor of Bombay in August 1834 was deeply touched by the vast number of Indian who dying for want of proper medical care.
He envisaged the idea of Indians being trained in European system of medicine and in 1838 proposed to the government the formation of a medical college and a teaching hospital. Sir Jamshetjee Jejeebhoy, the First Indian Knight and Baronet (1783-1859), offered a magnanimous donation of one hundred thousand rupees.
The proposal of Medical College was sanctioned by the government and conveyed in the letter dated July 18, 1838. The foundation stone was laid on March 30, 1843. Simultaneously with the plans and foundation of the college, it was also decided with the aid of munificent donation offered by Sir Jamshetjee Jejeebhoy, to substitute the previously existing Native General Hospital in the city by creating the Sir J.J. Hospital.
Its foundation stone was laid on January 3, 1843 and it was opened for reception of the sick from May 15, 1845.
Grant Medical College now stands in affiliation with J.J. Hospital as one of the top ranking medical colleges in India.
Courses, Infrastructure and Facilities
The main course at Grant Medical College is the MBBS course. Internships after MBBS are also offered here as is a course in nursing. Throughout the year, various medical symposiums and paper presentations are held to increase the students' exposure to medical practice. The college is one of the few across the country to have been chosen by the government to get funds in order to upgrade it to the level of All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi. Moreover, recently the college has acquired new machinery in the department of radiology and the surgical operation theatre is also being revamped.
Astitva is the annual college festival which is held in January. It is an inter-college festival in which mostly medical and engineering colleges participate, though all colleges are invited. Quizzes too are held quite often and there is a literary club as well as a music club.
The sports festival, Kurukshetra, is held in February every year. It is held in the Grant Medical College Gymkhana which is at Marine Lines. Facilities for badminton, cricket, a football and volleyball ground are present here. There are two ladies' hostels and three men's hostel in the campus itself.
