While thousands of medical aspirants had pinned their hopes on the new National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET) examination format introduced this year, it seems the continued state of uncertainty around the new exam has fuelled further hike in the price of medical seats in private colleges of Karnataka, killing a thousand aspirations.

Even as thousands of students who appeared in the NEET examination are finding it difficult to come to terms with the situation, the colleges on the other hand are making the most of this opportunity.

Consequently, medical seats in Karnataka are getting out of the reach for many, with colleges upping their price from Rs 1 crore to a whopping Rs 2 crore. The seat for an MD (Radiolody) is apparently worth Rs 2.75 crore.

While it was thought that the introduction of revised NEET will give a fair chance to numerous aspirants aiming for a Medical seat, it has actually worsened the situation. Aspirants from other states have lined up to block the seats in Karnataka since their home states scrapped tests after the introduction of NEET.

To add to students woes, the price of (Radiolody) seat has been hiked to Rs 2.75 crore, Orthopaedics and Dermatology are not far behind either, as they cost Rs 2 crore each, Paediatrics is worth  Rs 1.84 crore and OBG (Obstetrics and Gynaecology) has crossed the Rs 1 crore mark this year.

While Karnataka is allowing students from other states for admission, the rates for the management seats have been hiked too given the fact that this could be the last year that managements could quote their own fee structure. With May 31st being the last day to complete PG admissions, implementation of NEET in Karnataka could only happen next year.

Only if NEET was implemented across the country this year itself, students could have gained eligibility to any PG seat with a minimum score of 50 percentile in the test.

Meanwhile there is uncertainty over the plight of students appearing for NEET UG exam on May 18th, for it hasn’t been declared yet whether their hard earned scores will be considered for admission or not. The NEET-UG exam was postponed in Tamil Nadu due to elections. The exam has already been conducted across the rest of the country on May 5, 2013.
