MCI cuts over 2400 MBBS seats in Karnataka
The Medical Council of India (MCI) has cancelled the renewal of eight medical colleges in the state of Karnataka. With this decision, Karnataka will lose almost 1210 undergraduate medical seats, giving a major jolt to medical aspirants in the state.
The eight colleges for which seat renewal has been put down includes, Karnataka’s popular state-run Koppal Institute of Medical Sciences with a capacity of 150 seats. Take a look at the below table for complete list of institute for which the seat renewal has been denied by MCI.

While, a number of colleges have accepted the council’s decision, there are a few who wish to take the matter to the court. V Manjula – Principal Secretary of Medical Education at KIMS was quoted saying that “We will battle it out in the Supreme Court” Adding to her statement she further suggested that they should have been given some time to cope up with the lack of facilities instead of the proposal being cancelled.
Dr M B Sanikop – Principal at Oxford Medical College, Bengaluru was also quoted saying “MCI has cited issues like insufficient clinic staff, faculty and deficiency in clinical material, we have protested the MCI’s statement and will take the matter to the court”. The college currently has 450 students enrolled across three batches. After the MCI’s decision, the college will not be able to accept fresh batches for the new academic session.
Admission authority at various other private medical colleges are hopping to seek permission on renewal by August. Principal at one of the colleges said that since the counselling process has not yet commenced, we still have a chance to seek permission by improving the quality of medical facilitates provided by the respective institute.
Furthermore, MCI has also denied the establishment approval of eight new medical colleges each with a seat intake of 150.
