Proposal For Private Medical Institutes To Set Up Foreign Campuses
As per the Health Ministry plans, private medical colleges would now be permitted to set up their campuses
overseas. The plan came after several medical institutions opposed MCIs move to reject setting up of campuses abroad. However, the Health Ministry has assured that the foreign campuses will be as per the standards. The feedback on the matter is still awaited from Human Resource Development Ministry.
Presently as per the Medical Council of India (MCI) rules, no medical college can get automatic recognition earned outside the Indian Territory, even if it has been awarded by an institution having its headquarters in India. By this it is clarified that degrees that are awarded by foreign campuses of Indian institutes, enjoy the similar status as that of foreign degrees.
As per the prevailing scenario, students who have attained medical degrees from foreign institutions are required to appear for a MCI screening test, before they can actually begin their medical practice in India. However, those institutes that provide courses along with medical like engineering and management are permitted to set up campuses abroad and these will be based on regulations laid by HRD ministry.
The deemed universities are eligible to set up their campuses in foreign countries, if they fulfill certain tough regulations that had been brought to the fore by the government in 2010.
