Admissions done under 'Maratha Quota' in Maharashtra Colleges, FYJC before September 9 VALID
An interim order was passed on September 9 by SC, pausing the admissions on the criteria until the verdict.
Maratha Reservation: Maharashtra College admissions for the 2020-21 academic year done under the Maratha Reservation quota would not be impacted by any decision taken against the ‘Maratha reservation’. Supreme Court on April 5, 2021, decided to strike down the Maharashtra government’s Maratha reservation quota for education and jobs. However, it clarified that the decision does not implement for those students who have already secured the seat last year before September 9.
Reservation under Maratha Quota was implemented for College and FYJC admissions in the state and was underway when it stayed. An interim order was passed on September 9 by SC, pausing the admissions on the criteria until the verdict. Considering the large number of admission requests, the state requested the court for resumption of the admission process sans the quota and was permitted to do. The government had then also asked the students to opt under the EWS category instead.
However, before the interim order about its discontinuation, a few degree colleges had already admitted students under the quota. All such admissions, please note, would continue to remain valid. A total of 17,844 seats were reserved under the quota in FYJC in Mumbai Metropolitan Area. Of these, 2309 seats were filled before September 9.
Impact Maratha Reservation Verdict on this year’s admissions
With the discontinuation of the Maratha Reservation, there are now approximately 40,000 more FYJC seats available for students under the open category. The biggest impact will be seen by medical students. With the quota, the number of open seats in the state had shrunk by 12%. A similar number of seats would also open for engineering and other professional courses in the state.
