The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has declared CBSE 12th Result 2026 on May 13. The overall pass percentage is 85.20%. This year, the overall pass percentage dropped by 3 per cent. Last year, the pass percentage was 88.39%. The drop in pass percentage comes in a year when CBSE had introduced on-screen marking system for evaluating the answer scripts digitally. The question is, βIs the decline in pass percentage due to On Screen Marking system?β
This has triggered discussions among students, parents and experts over social media about whether CBSE has tightened its evaluation process after years of relatively stable performance. Though board has not termed the assessment process as tougher. However, there are multiple points which indicates that the board is adopting to stricter assessment process and ending its era of score leniency.

Introduction of New Evaluation System
This year, board has adopted to on screen marking system where the answer scripts of students were evaluated digitally. This system ensured that the evaluators allot marks as per the marking scheme. According to board, on screen marking system reduces the totaling, posting and uploading errors. The teachers involved in the evaluation faced lots of hardships while evaluating the answer scripts of students. However, CBSE has said that the evaluation process has been done completely in a fair manner. There were no anomalies or glitches in the evaluation process. Experts also link the decline in pass percentage to implementation of on screen marking process, competency-based evaluation, alongside tougher question paper.
Tough Paper, Less Marks; CBSE 12th Result Left Students Surprised
As soon as CBSE Class 12 result 2026 were announced, students took to social media expressing their disappointment over the evaluation process. Even students are commenting on Shikshaβs Youtube videos regarding the improper marks calculation process. They are saying why CBSE did not show any leniency in score calculation when the paper was tough. Some also said that less marks are due to the on screen marking system.

What Students Can Do?
Students who are not happy with their marks can apply for re-checking and re-evaluation of answer scripts. They need to first obtain the photocopy of the answer scripts and then apply for re-evaluation. Students can also apply for supplementary or improvement exam to improve their marks.
