IIIT Hyderabad CETLS

IIIT Hyderabad CETLS

IIIT Hyderabad CETLS 2026: International Institute of Information Technology Hyderabad is set to launch its new Centre for Educational Technology and Learning Sciences (CETLS) on September 5. The interdisciplinary centre will bring together psychology, cognitive science, learning sciences and technology to develop new methods and tools that can help people learn better in an AI-driven world.

CETLS will focus on difference between being a digital native and an AI native. The centre does not aim to resist the use of artificial intelligence in education. Instead, it will explore how AI can support important human learning abilities such as attention, curiosity, critical thinking, problem-solving and the ability to work through difficult concepts.

IIIT Hyderabad CETLS  to focus on four areas of learning

CETLS will work across four major areas K-12 education, higher education, executive education and third-age learning. The common goal across these areas will be to help people develop deeper learning skills and remain capable of learning throughout their lives.

In school education, CETLS will explore ways to move children from rote learning towards practical and experiential learning. It will also study how AI can be used to strengthen students' own thinking instead of simply providing answers.

For higher education, CETLS plans to explore personalised learning through AI-based learning companions. These tools could identify students' strengths and weaknesses, ask questions, identify gaps in understanding and encourage students to explore concepts more deeply.

CETLS will also focus on executive education, where rapid technological changes are increasing need for upskilling and reskilling. AI-based learning companions could help professionals learn new skills through practical tasks rather than passive learning.

CETLS plans to collaborate with schools, colleges, universities, edtech companies and international experts. It will begin with two full-time founding faculty members, with plans to expand core faculty to five to 10 members over next three to four years.
