Indian Institute of Technology, (IIT) Roorkee has advised its students and staff members living in non-containment hostels to return home amid the terrifying surge in the novel coronavirus cases within the campus. According to the reports, IIT Roorkee has asked the non-infected staff and students to vacate the hostel by April 21 and return to their hometown. The institute has also made arrangements for in-house RT-PCR tests, i.e. COVID test for its students and staff living in states which have mandated a negative report before entering their borders. Talking about the RT-PCR test facility available at the institute, IIT Roorkee said, “The students whose states require an RT-PCR report for entry are being tested today and their reports will be made available by tomorrow.”
In order to facilitate the travel of students and staff members back home, the Dean of students’ welfare has also issued a support letter.
The institute started taking strict steps in order to curb the spread of the COVID-19 virus on the campus when on April 9, 90 IIT Roorkee students tested positive for COVID-19. The discovery led to 5 hostels including Coral, Kasturba, Sarojini, Govind Bhawan, and Vigyan Kunj getting sealed and turned into containment zones.
Meanwhile, IIT Roorkee introduced a new MTech programme in Very Large Scale Integration (VLSI) for industry professionals. The duration of the course launched by the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, IIT Roorkee is three years and classes for the 2021-22 academic session will commence online. The course also includes a contact programme with faculty in the Greater Noida campus of IIT Roorkee each semester.
Talking about the newly launched programme, Professor Ajit K Chaturvedi, Director, IIT Roorkee, said, "Microelectronics and VLSI industry is driving the digital revolution by providing the required resources. It employs a large number of trained engineers. Many of them aspire for higher education but are unable to pursue it full-time. This course will fulfill the need of such professionals."
