IP University Admission 2206: No More Rank-Capping For Unfilled Seats; Physical Spot Counselling Introduced

GGSIPU admission 2026 rules have been changed for unfilled seats. Delhi government has removed IP University rank-capping policy for vacant intake in order to facilitate lower-ranked candidates getting admission. Students can now claim IP University vacant seats left after regular rounds through physical reporting.

The Delhi government has announced a major change to the IP University admission policy. The board have removed the rank-capping system at Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIPU) admissions for vacant seats after regular counselling rounds. Now, candidates with lower ranks get a fair opportunity for getting admissions. They can apply for the IP University vacant seats through physical reporting at the respective college. This rule applies after regular counselling rounds finish. The Directorate of Higher Education has already notified about the changes. This decision will be effective for the current GGSIPU admission 2026 cycle. 

Why IP University Removed Rank-Capping? 

The decision to remove rank capping was made as huge number of seats remained empty every year. Over 29,000 seats stayed vacant over the last three academic sessions. In 2023-24, over 11,000 seats were unfilled. The next year saw 8,512 vacant seats. In the 2025-26 session, 8,725 seats remained empty.

Further, the old rank-capping system was highly restrictive. It fixed a maximum closing rank for every course. Candidates scoring below that rank could not apply. Even if seats were empty, they were blocked. The new policy removes this barrier, allowing students with lower ranks to apply for colleges.

GGSIPU Admission 2026: What's New?

The government is introducing a new system where GGSIPU will now conduct physical spot counselling. Other top Delhi universities already use this method, such as DTU, NSUT, and IGDTUW. In this system, candidates have to report to the venue physically.

Only attending candidates get on the daily merit list. The university will allocate seats right at the moment. This allows the university to complete the process quickly and transparently. Empty seats will fill up much faster now. Students must track the official website for schedules.
