Colleges, Universities to remain closed in Shillong amid COVID-19 surge
Universities, colleges and other educational institutions are being shut once again across the country after observing a surge in the novel coronavirus cases.
COVID-19 Impact: The Meghalaya government on April 22 announced the closure of colleges and universities in the state capital Shillong until May 3 amid the rising numbers of the COVID-19 cases. Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong said shops dealing in non-essential items in Shillong will also be closed from April 26 to May 2. After reviewing the situation in a meeting conducted on the COVID-19 situation chaired by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, Mr Tynsong said, "Colleges and universities in the state capital have been asked to shut down till May 3 except for those that are hosting state board examinations.”
Meanwhile, schools from the primary level to the higher secondary level are already shut by the Meghalaya government. Mr Tynsong said that gyms, swimming pools, gaming parlours, cinemas, clubs, salons and bars of Shillong will remain closed until April 30. The deputy chief minister also informed that government offices of the state capital will also operate with 33 per cent strength from the current 50 per cent for group C and D staff.

Gauhati University is also mulling to conduct semester examinations via alternative modes in view of the prevailing COVID-19 pandemic situation. However, according to the reports, GU has already commenced the examinations and they will continue as per schedule, without facing any change. Students will be notified about the details of the method adopted by GU to conduct exams.
