Students studying state-run schools in West Bengal will be getting masks, soaps, and other items from next month along with the mid-day meals. 

West Bengal government has announced that it will provide students studying in state-run schools with masks, soaps and other items as part of the mid-day meal programme from July, in order to help them to protect themselves from coronavirus.

West Bengal Education Minister Partha Chatterjee said that these students are getting rice and potato during the lockdown and from next month the government will be providing them daal, soyabean, mask and soap also.

These items will be handed over to guardians of students from their schools.

The minister said the government will also provide free text books, exercise books and pencils to students in Amphan-affected areas of the state.

He also urged private schools in the state not to hike tuition fees in this academic session as many people are facing financial hardship due to the nationwide lockdown. 

“Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had yesterday urged you (private schools) not to hike your fees this academic session. I am only repeating what she said,” he said.

On June 10, Chief Minister had directed all private schools in West Bengal not to hike fees this year owing to the critical economic situation due to the coronavirus outbreak in the country. She also indicated that closure of schools may be extended for a month beyond June 30.

The total number of coronavirus cases in the country on Friday has reached to 2,97,535 mark. The country has reported the highest single-day spike of 10,956 new cases & 396 deaths in the last 24-hours.
