The Department of Electrical Engineering and the Foundation for Innovation and Technology Transfer (FITT) at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi organised a two-day international workshop, titled Indo-US Workshop on 6G Technologies. The workshop featured panel discussions and presentations by key telecom stakeholders from both India and the US, including renowned academics, government representatives, standardization bodies, telecom operators, and equipment manufacturers.
Objectives of IIT Delhi Indo-US Workshop on 6G Technologies
The primary objectives of the workshop are to: (i) assess the current status of 6G development in India, (ii) discuss Indiaβs 6G goals, including use cases, technology development, IPR, prototype/testbed creation, equipment/device manufacturing, and the development of skilled manpower, and (iii) recommend strategies for achieving these goals and explore how Indo-US collaboration can contribute to their success.
Speaking about the workshop, Prof. Shankar Prakriya, Head, Dept. of Electrical Engineering, IIT Delhi, who is a telecommunication researcher, said, βThe workshop is a unique opportunity for students, researchers, and engineers to get a firsthand understanding of 6G. It is very timely given that 6G research is already underway, and standardization is expected to start next year.β
The workshop coordinator, Prof. Saif Khan Mohammed, Dept. of Electrical Engineering, IIT- Delhi, said, βSixth generation (6G) communication systems are expected to enable new use cases such as ubiquitous connectivity (e.g., through non-terrestrial networks), industry automation, autonomous driving, and tactile internet/mobile robots. New use cases bring their own issues of reliability, efficiency, security, and sustainability. An objective of this workshop is to understand the technology enablers for these new use cases and how India can lead the innovation of new technologies.β
The workshop is sponsored by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India; the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, Government of India; Tejas Networks; Qualcomm India Private Limited; and the IEEE Communications Society (Delhi Chapter).
