JEE Mains 2026 Cutoff Rises Amid Increased Competition

The JEE Main cutoff determines eligibility for JEE Advanced and admission to participating institutes. This year, the qualifying cutoff percentile has gone up across most categories compared to previous years. Experts attribute this rise to a combination of higher participation, improved student performance, and relatively balanced question papers across sessions.

JEE Mains Cutoff

JEE Mains Cutoff Trends (2019 - 2026) by Category

  • Unreserved Category at an 8-Year High: The Unreserved (UR) cutoff has reached its highest cutoff at 93.41.
  • Significant Increase in Reserved Categories: The most dramatic shifts are seen in the OBC-NCL and SC categories. The 2026 cutoff for OBC-NCL (80.92) is approximately 16.5 percentile higher than its historical average (64.40). Similarly, the SC category cutoff (63.92) has risen by 16.1 percentile over its 7-year average (47.77).
  • Gen-EWS Upward Shift: The Gen-EWS category also shows a substantial increase, with the 2026 cutoff (82.42) being 8.7 percentile higher than the historical average of 73.67.
  • Mixed Trends for ST and UR-PwD: Unlike other categories, the ST category cutoff (52.02) is slightly below its 8-year average (53.33). The UR-PwD cutoff remains extremely low, consistent with historical patterns.

Next Steps for Candidates - Competitive JoSAA 2026 Counselling Session Ahead

Candidates can check their JEE Main 2026 results using their application number and password on the official website. The scorecard includes subject-wise percentiles, total percentile, and All India Rank. Candidates who meet the JEE Mains cutoff will now be eligible to appear for JEE Advanced 2026, the gateway to IIT admissions.

Meanwhile, those aiming for NITs, IIITs, and other centrally funded technical institutions will have to participate in the JoSAA counselling process, which will start from June 2 at josaa.nic.in. The complete counselling schedule for JoSAA will be announced shortly, and candidates are advised to keep all required documents ready. With record participation and a sharp rise in cutoff, JEE Main 2026 has underlined the growing competition in engineering admissions, setting the stage for an equally competitive counselling season ahead.

A higher cutoff also indicates that securing seats in top branches such as Computer Science Engineering at leading NITs will require higher ranks this year. Candidates are advised to carefully analyse previous years’ closing ranks and expected cutoffs while filling their choices during counselling.
