Retracted Research Papers Could Be Behind Delayed NIRF Ranking 2026 Delay

The Ministry of Education has not yet released the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2026 rankings. The delay has extended the wait for students, colleges and universities, as the rankings are usually announced by August or September. This year, however, the assessment process is taking longer than expected. According to recent media reports, the delay is linked to the ongoing assessment and verification of data submitted by higher education institutions. The ranking process is now under increased scrutiny due to research papers being retracted.

The National Board of Accreditation (NBA), which conducts the ranking exercise under the Ministry of Education, is currently assessing data submitted by participating institutions. One of the issues being examined this year is the presence of retracted research papers in institutional submissions. Reports suggest that NIRF has flagged such papers as part of the assessment process. Institutions could face negative marking. Repeat offenders may even be banned from participating in future ranking cycles. The additional verification and assessment could be one reason why the NIRF 2026 rankings have taken longer than usual.
