Since 2014, the Central Government has established six new IITs and upgraded the Indian School of Mines (ISM), Dhanbad to an IIT.

The central government has no plan to set up more Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) in the country right now. There are 23 IITs functioning in the country at present, since 2014, the central government has established six new IITs and upgraded the Indian School of Mines (ISM), Dhanbad to an IIT.

Responding to a question on opening IITs in every state, Union Minister of State in the Ministry of Education Dr Subhas Sarkar informed that as of now, there is no proposal to set up more IITs in the Country.

On a specific question regarding setting up IIT in Karnal and Kurukshetra in Haryana and Khandwa Parliamentary constituency in Madhya Pradesh on the lines of the model of Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Rohtak and IIM Indore the Minister informed that there are 23 IITs already functioning, and there is no immediate plan to establish more IITs.

There are 23 IITs functioning in the Country, viz. IIT Bombay (Maharashtra), IIT Delhi (Delhi), IIT Kanpur (Uttar Pradesh), IIT Kharagpur (West Bengal), IIT Madras (Tamil Nadu), IIT Guwahati (Assam), IIT Roorkee (Uttarakhand), IIT(BHU), Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh), IIT Ropar (Punjab), IIT Patna (Bihar), IIT Hyderabad (Telangana), IIT Jodhpur (Rajasthan), IIT Gandhinagar (Gujarat), IIT Bhubaneswar (Odisha), IIT Indore (Madhya Pradesh), IIT Mandi (Himachal Pradesh), IIT Jammu (Jammu & Kashmir), IIT Bhilai (Chhattisgarh), IIT Goa (Goa), IIT Palakkad (Kerala), IIT Tirupati (Andhra Pradesh), IIT Dharwad (Karnataka) and IIT (ISM) Dhanbad (Jharkhand). As of now, there is no proposal to set up more IITs in the Country.
