Who Can Appear for JEE Main 2027? Check Eligibility, Drop-Year Rules and More
With JEE Main session 1 is tentatively scheduled from January 22, students should first know whether they are eligible and then identify their target colleges. The decision to appear in the national-level NTA JEE Mains should not be based only on the possibility of getting a high percentile if students fail to meet their admission criteria.
The National Testing Agency (NTA) has announced the JEE Main 2027 examination schedule, with session 1 scheduled to begin on January 22, 2027. With the exam date now confirmed, students may be wondering whether they should appear for JEE Main 2027, particularly those who have already completed Class 12 or are taking a drop year.
The answer depends on the year in which a candidate passed or will pass Class 12, as well as their admission plans. JEE Main is conducted for admission to NITs, IIITs and other participating institutions. It is also the qualifying examination for JEE Advanced, through which candidates can seek admission to IITs.

Who Can Appear for JEE Main 2027?
Candidates who passed their Class 12 or equivalent examination in 2025 or 2026, or those appearing for the Class 12 examination in 2027, are eligible to appear for JEE Main 2027. Candidates who passed Class 12 in 2024 or earlier are not eligible for JEE Main 2027. There is no age limit for appearing in the examination. However, candidates must meet the admission requirements of the institute or course they wish to join.
Should You Take JEE Main Even If You Are Targeting IITs?
Students targeting IITs should also appear for JEE Main because the examination is the eligibility test for JEE Advanced. JEE Main Paper 1 is conducted for B.E./B.Tech admissions to NITs, IIITs and other participating institutions, while performance in JEE Main is also used to determine eligibility for JEE Advanced. Therefore, students preparing primarily for IIT admission should not consider JEE Main as irrelevant. The January and April attempts can also provide valuable examination experience before JEE Advanced.
