Government yet to take decision on IIT reservations for admission & faculty appointment
The government is yet to take any decision on the recommendation of the panel’s recommendations that the IITs should be exempted from reservations in faculty appointments.
Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank recently announced that a decision is yet to be taken by the government on the recommendation that Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) should be exempted from reservations in faculty appointments. While informing Rajya Sabha, the minister said, “The government is yet to take any decision on the recommendation of the panel’s recommendations that the IITs should be exempted from reservations in faculty appointments.” In a written reply to a question in the Upper House, the minister wrote, “The committee had submitted its report in June last year and it was circulated to all the ministries concerned and their comments have been received. The government has not yet taken a decision on the recommendations of the committee.”
Earlier, the government asked an eight-member committee comprising IIT directors to suggest measures on effective implementation of reservation policies not only in recruitment but also for admissions. Calling IITs ‘institutes of national importance and are involved in research’, a report submitted to the government said that the IITs should be exempted from reservations. According to various media reports, an educationist said, “As IITs are premier institutions nurturing great minds, they should be exempted from reservations in the faculty appointment at least if not in case of admission of students. It’s risky and injustice on part of the students to have incompetent faculty.”
The government should consider the same through various angles and a decision in favour of IIT students by not allowing reservations in the appointment of faculty in such institutions, he added.
