UGC Asks HEIs to Offer SWAYAM MOOCs in July 2026 Semester; Issues Fresh Guidelines

UGC SWAYAM MOOCs

University Grants Commission (UGC) has asked higher education institutions (HEIs) to identify and integrate relevant SWAYAM Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) into their academic programmes for July 2026 semester. Commission has also directed institutions to ensure that students complete course registration before deadlines announced by national coordinators.

In a letter addressed to universities and colleges, UGC said SWAYAM, Government of India's national online learning platform, offers high quality online courses. This platform supports objectives of National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 by promoting multidisciplinary learning, academic flexibility, wider learner choice and opportunity to earn academic credits.

The Commission reminded institutions that under UGC (Credit Framework for Online Learning Courses through SWAYAM) Regulations, HEIs may allow students to take up to 40% of total courses offered in a particular programme in a semester through online credit courses available on SWAYAM platform.

For the July 2026 semester, the Ministry of Education has approved a list of MOOCs developed by national coordinators

• CEC

• NPTEL

• IGNOU

• IIM Bangalore (IIMB)

• AICTE

• NITTTR

• Institutions of National Importance

This list of approved courses, along with registration last date for each national coordinator, has been made available on SWAYAM portal. UGC has asked institutions to circulate approved course list among deans, heads of departments and SWAYAM University Nodal Officers (UNOs). 

It has also directed universities to convene meetings of their SWAYAM Advisory Committees to identify and map relevant courses with existing programmes and syllabi, finalise mechanisms for credit transfer and adoption during July 2026 semester.
