The University Grants Commission has asked universities and colleges to hold an exhibition on the horrors of partition. The institutions have been urged to display the exhibition from 10th to 14th August 2022 at prominent places, where a large number of people can see it.

Prime Minister, Narendra Modi in his speech on August 15, 2021, announced to observe August 14 as 'Partition Horrors Remembrance Day: In this year of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav (AKAM), when the nation completes 75 years of independence, the Partition Horrors Remembrance Day is being observed throughout the country.

As per the UGC, the Partition Horrors Remembrance Day has been envisaged to bring to light the agony, suffering and pain of millions of people who were the sufferers of the partition. It is to remind the country of the largest displacement of the human population in the last century, which also claimed the lives of a large number of people.

To showcase the sufferings of the partition-affected people, an exhibition has been curated jointly by the Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR) and the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA). This exhibition, in English and Hindi, is available in digital format at the website address bttps://amritmahotsay.nic.in/partition-horror-remembrance-day.htm

All the universities and their affiliated/constituent colleges/ institutions have been requested to display the exhibition from 10th to 14th August 2022 at prominent places, where a large number of people can see it.
β€œRealizing the sensitivity of the issue, it should be ensured that the exhibition is showcased with the sobriety and solemnness that it deserves. It should be especially ensured that the sentiments of any section of society are not allowed to be hurt. The display of exhibition may be accompanied with small programmes to be organized by the head of the relevant institution,” the UGC letter reads.

UGC has also issued a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for organizing these programmes, which may be followed in all cases.
