UGC Urges Higher Education Institutions to Strengthen POSH Act Implementation
UGC has asked institutions to establish Internal Committees (ICs) to handle harassment complaints
University Grants Commission (UGC) has asked all Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) across India, to enhance implementation of the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition, and Redressal) Act, 2013, commonly known as the POSH Act.
UGC notice underscores legal obligation of colleges and universities to create safe and inclusive campus environments. Institutions have been reminded to establish Internal Committees (ICs) to handle harassment complaints, conduct mandatory training and sensitization programs for students, staff, and faculty, and ensure clear policies are widely shared.
Directive also stresses the importance of robust mechanisms for prevention, reporting, and timely resolution of issues, along with maintaining transparency in addressing complaints.
The UGC has urged HEIs to comply fully with the Act and ensure equality, non-discrimination, and the right to a safe workplace. The notice states that non-compliance could lead to penalties, including the withdrawal of grants or removal from the UGCβs recognized list.
UGC in its notice has highlighted collective responsibility of academic community to uphold dignity, equity, and safety with national goals for womenβs development.
