His appointment as a CJI is historic on multiple fronts. The first Dalit to do so, was Justice K.G. Balakrishnan, who served from 2007 to 2010. The move marks the step forward to a greater inclusivity and representation in the Indian Juidical System.
During his swearing-in ceremony, Justice Gavai reassured his dedication to upholding social and political justice, in line with the Dr. Ambedkar's philosophy of equality and dignity for the marginalised. He further emphasised that as a CJI he will work on promoting these principles within the judiciary.
He is set to retire on November 23, 2025. Justice Gavai's tenure as CJI is expected to be the same day. Legal experts believe that his leadership will bring inclusivity and strengthen the judiciary's commitment to uphold the rights of Indian citizens.
