Maharashtra government approves 190 new colleges including 24 new colleges for Mumbai University
With this latest addition, Mumbai University will become one of the larger universities of the country with over 850 colleges under its wing.
Maharashtra Government approved approximately 190 new colleges for the various state universities. Among the approved colleges, 24 new colleges are for Mumbai University. With this latest addition, Mumbai University will become one of the larger universities of the country with over 850 colleges under its wing. A letter of intent has already been issued by the Maharashtra Government to 190 colleges. Of these, 166 have received full approval while 24 have received conditional approval. These 24 colleges are required to fulfill certain criteria laid out by the government to get the official nod.
Reports suggest that 5 colleges have received approval for Mumbai. These 5 colleges include law college in Kandivli, and three more law colleges in Thane district. Other proposed colleges are expected in Ghatkopar, Kurla, orivli and Govandi. Law college run by Birla College is proposed for Kalyan. SNDT Women’s University has gotten approval for 28 colleges across the state.
Most of the proposed colleges already run schools or junior colleges in the various districts of the state. The proposal was sent to the State Government, which in turn has given its sanctions in two separate resolutions issued on April 15 and May 17.
Speaking on the same, an official from the Ministry of Higher and Technical Education stated that the move is taken to “facilitate the accessibility of education, as outlined by the National Education Policy. With the criteria in mind, the department has accordingly sanctioned the same for colleges that comply with the norms while others have been asked to fulfill the deficiencies.”
