Directors of some IIMs expressed concerns that a strict mandate could affect the talent pool, but the government maintained that constitutional provisions on reservation must be followed.
The Education Ministry has issued a strong reminder to the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) to comply with reservation policy in faculty recruitment, after finding several campuses lagging behind.
At the recent meeting of the IIM Coordination Forum, chaired by the Higher Education Secretary, the institutes were told that reservation quotas of 27 % for OBC, 15 % for SC and 7.5 % for ST candidates cannot remain unimplemented.
The ministry conveyed that citing a โshortage of qualified applicantsโ was not a valid reason for non-compliance, as reported The Telegraph.
Directors of some IIMs expressed concerns that a strict mandate could affect the talent pool, but the government maintained that constitutional provisions on reservation must be followed in full. Vacancies in reserved faculty positions have remained high across several IIMs despite repeated reminders from the Centre.
The government has also pointed out gaps in PhD admissions. Institutions such as IIM Ahmedabad have now moved to introduce reservation in their PhD (FPM) programmes, after initially keeping them outside the ambit. The shift came following sustained pressure and legal scrutiny.
