Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has inaugurated the first MBA batch at the newly established Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Guwahati. The ceremony took place at the institute’s temporary campus in Tech City, Bongora, located in the Kamrup district.
The first batch of the two-year MBA program (2026–28) includes 52 students who come from 18 different states across India. IIM Guwahati is starting its operations under the mentorship of IIM Ahmedabad. It is the 22nd IIM in India and the second one built in the North East region.
Speaking at the launch event, Chief Minister Sarma called this moment a major milestone for higher education in Assam and the North Eastern Region. He thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan for their support. He noted that the central government has expanded top-quality business education by increasing the total number of IIMs from 13 in 2014 to 22 today.
To ensure IIM Guwahati could start its first batch without delay, the Assam state government spent nearly INR 39 crore to build a modern temporary campus. This facility includes new classrooms, offices, a library, staff quarters, and three student hostel buildings. Meanwhile, work is progressing on the permanent campus, which will cover around 189 acres in Palashbari. The permanent campus is expected to be ready within the next three years.
During his speech, Sarma expressed concern that local students currently hold less than 20 per cent of the seats in premier national institutions located in Assam. He urged schools and communities to motivate local youth so that students from Assam can secure at least 50 per cent of these seats in the future.

Earlier that day, the Chief Minister also inaugurated a new Digital Design and 3D Printing Centre at Tech City, built at a cost of INR 53.84 crore to help boost technology skills and employment in the region.
