Six new IIMs to offer 300 seats for the academic year 2015-17

The six new IIMs announced in 2014 budget will begin their academic session from 2015. The new IIMs will offer 300 seats, taking the total number of seats offered by 19 IIMs to 3635, according to a leading business daily.

The new IIMs will be set up at Himachal Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Odisha, Punjab and Maharashtra. The sites of most of the IIM has been finalized or atleast shortlisted. The site finalization of the IIMs was delayed due to the issue of land acquisition. It is not easy for the new IIMs to get 150-200 acers of land in the states, claimed an government authority.

Establishment of Indian Institute of Management (IIM) at Bodh Gaya, Bihar, has been finalised by the HRD ministry. The campus will be set up at the 600 acer land of Magadh University campus. The setting up of new campus on 150 acer land will cost about Rs 900 crore to IIM Bodh Gaya. While IIM at Gambheeram in Anandapuram mandal, Visakhapatnam will lay its foundation on January 17, 2015. Although, after so many revolts from the farmers of Visakhapatnam, the IIM will finally be able to commence its activities from the academic session 2015. IIM Nagpur has already laid its foundation. For the rest three new IIMs, the sites are yet to be finalised.

The new IIMs that are operating without campuses are still facing problems even after four years of operation. IIM Ranchi and IIM Rohtak have been complaining of not getting lands to set up their campuses. They are also yet to fill up faculty positions.
