50% Board Marks For Admission Through NEET, JEE Exams; Parliamentary Panel Suggests
The Central Government may give 50% weightage to Class 12 board marks in NEET and JEE admissions. Check the proposed changes, committee recommendations, and the latest update on medical and engineering entrance exams here.
50% Board Exam Weightage in NEET & JEE Admissions: Central Government is considering a major change in the admission process for medical and engineering courses. A proposal is under consideration to give 50 per cent weightage to Class 12 board exam scores for admissions where entrance exams such as NEET and JEE are required. If approved, the decision would be a big change in India's higher education admission system.
At present, admissions to MBBS, BDS, BTech, BArch and several other professional programmes are primarily based on NEET and JEE scores, while Class 12 board marks are used only as eligibility. Under the proposed system, board examination marks and entrance examination scores would each contribute 50 per cent towards preparing the final merit list.
The proposal is currently being reviewed by a nine-member committee under the Ministry of Education. The panel was formed to review concerns related to coaching dependency and fairness in entrance exams. While the recommendations have generated significant interest from students and parents, the government has not taken any final decision yet.
Proposed Changes in NEET and JEE Admissions
According to sources, the committee has recommended below changes:
- Class 12 board marks to receive 50% weightage.
- NEET or JEE scores may carry the remaining 50%.
- The final merit list would be prepared using both scores

Besides introducing board marks in the merit calculation, the committee has reportedly suggested several additional reforms, such as:
| Aligning the NEET and JEE syllabus more closely with the Class 11 and 12 curriculum. | Reducing students' dependence on coaching institutes. |
| Allowing multiple attempts for entrance examinations. | Gradually introducing adaptive, on-demand computer-based tests. |
