JIPMER will soon start India’s first course combining MBBS and BAMS (Ayurveda) specialisations. The Union Minister of the state said the course is still in the early planning stage, and a new syllabus is being prepared to include both modern and Ayurvedic medicine under one roof. 

JIPMER Integrated MBBS BAMS Programme

The Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER), Puducherry, will soon begin an integrated MBBS-BAMS programme at the institute. The Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare and AYUSH (Independent Charge), Prataprao Jadhav, has decided to integrate Allopathic and Ayurvedic medicine under one academic curriculum with the announcement of an integrated medical and Ayurvedic programme at JIPMER Puducherry. The Union Minister of the state has mentioned that the programme is at the conceptual stage and a new curriculum is under development. 

The Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare and AYUSH shared the government's vision to integrate allopathy and ayurveda in medical education saying “The Union government is planning to introduce a new integrated medical course combining MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery) and BAMS (Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery).”

The minister further spoke about healthcare delivery in the region as well as educational improvements. He proclaimed that the Puducherry government's plan to open a new medical college is being considered and that a decision will be made shortly.

JIPMER Expands Infrastructural Facilities 

By constructing a new 470-bed hospital, JIPMER is growing its campus in Karaikal. According to the institute's director, outpatient services should begin by January 2027, and the hospital as a whole should be operational by June 2027. Further, the minister also stated that a proposal from the Puducherry government is under examination to establish a new medical college in the region, as reported by Medical Dialogues.
