Institute of Organ and Tissue Transplant set up cost will be INR 558.68 crore where phase I will cost INR 373.68 crore, while phase II will cost around 185 crores.

Institute of Organ Transplantation in Kozhikode

The Government of Kerala will establish an Institute of Organ and Tissue Transplant at Kozhikode to boost healthcare infrastructure. It is being developed as an Apex Institute for organ transplantation and associated activities. The establishment of the institute is aimed to be developed as a Centre of Excellence with skilled doctors, researchers and health workers.

The organ transplant sector faces several issues including an excessive number of patients, a shortage in the availability of organs and a lack of other basic facilities including good doctors. Besides, organ transplantation is extremely expensive and 90% of the transplants are conducted in the private sector. The majority of people in need of transplants die because they are unable to afford the corresponding fees.

In such a context, the Government of Kerala aims to offer organ transplants at a low cost with the establishment of the Institute of Organ Transplantation in Kozhikode and create the demanded workforce through varied super-speciality courses and research programmes. Besides, the authorities are also willing to administer mandatory training and create a plan to get and offer healthy organs of the diseased to suitable patients.

Institute of Organ Transplantation Action Plan

According to the Concept Note prepared by the HLL Infra Tech Services Limited (HITES), the cost of setting up the Institute of Organ Transplantation in Kozhikode will be INR 558.68 crore. The funds will be managed by Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB) and the plan will also have a vast 25-acre campus, 489 bedded super speciality hospital (with 219 general beds, 42 special ward beds, 58 ICU beds, 83 HDU beds, 16 Operation Rooms, Dialysis Centre and a Centre for Transplantation Research).

There will be 14 Specialty Departments and Divisions in Phase I, and 7 in Phase II. 31 academic courses including super speciality courses, post-doctoral fellowship courses, speciality nursing courses, transplant technician courses and transplant coordinator courses will be offered.
