Madras HC upholds TN's 7.5% reservation of govt school students in medical admissions
Madras High Court has upheld the Tamil Nadu government's 7.5% reservation for government school students in medical courses.
A plea was filed in the Madras High Court which challenged the constitutionality of the State Act providing horizontal reservation of 7.5% seats in medical colleges for students from government schools. Now, the Madras High Court, in its verdict, has upheld this reservation.
A bench of Chief Justice Munishwar Nath Bhandari and Justice D Bharatha Chakravarthy gave the judgement while directing the TN government to review the quota in five years.
"We direct the state government to review the same in a period of five years as recommended by the commission and during the intervening period, steps may be taken to improve the standard of education in government schools so that the reservation may not be further extended beyond five years," the court said, as reported by NDTV.
CM MK Stalin termed it a historic judgement
He tweeted, "The DMK has taken legal action to secure a 7.5% reservation in medical education for government school students. The #DravidianModel government has won the #HatTrick by defeating this case to protect #SocialJustice!"
"The judgement is a huge victory as the quota will provide a level playing field for medical aspirants from the economically weaker sections," Stalin said.
"Following medical education, when we came to power, we gave reservations to public school students in vocational courses! We charge tuition and accommodation fees! The High Court judgment Social Justice has shown that our every step in the journey is solid!" he tweeted.
