Medical colleges increased by 67% since 2014: Centre

As per the Central government's report 'Governance Reforms in Medical Education', nearly 93 medical colleges have been set up in the last eight years with special central aid.
A report released by the Centre says that nearly 261 new medical colleges were set up in the past eight years which is an increase of 67%. In the number of government medical colleges, there is an increase of 96% and in the private sector, there is an increase of 42% since 2014, as stated by the report 'Governance Reforms in Medical Education'.
As per this report, the number of MBBS seats increased by 87% to reach 96,077, PG medical seats increased by 105% and total seats reached 63,842. Moreover, 58 colleges across 16 states have been approved with an increase of 3,877 MBBS seats to date, said the report, as reported by Indian Express.
The health ministry is working to create 10,000 MBBS seats in government medical colleges alone. 72 medical colleges in 21 states or Union Territories have been approved with an increase of 4,058 PG seats in phase one. In the next phase, 47 medical colleges have been approved with an increase of 2,975 postgraduate seats in government medical colleges.
The National Medical Commission (NMC) has also started several reforms and relaxations to increase postgraduate seats. To address the shortfall of specialists, the National Board of Examinations in Medical Science has launched two-year postgraduate diplomas in eight disciplines, which will increase the capacity by 2,000 seats per year, the report said.
