The Madhya Pradesh High Court has directed the National Testing Agency (NTA) to conduct a re-examination of NEET UG 2025 for candidates who faced power outages during the test at centres in Indore and Ujjain. The relief, however, is limited to students who had filed petitions before June 3, 2025, seeking redressal due to the disruption. The decision was delivered by Justice Subodh Abhyankar of the Indore bench, who stated that students affected by such infrastructural failures cannot be penalised for circumstances beyond their control.

The power went out during the national medical entrance exam on May 4, 2025. In Indore, at least 18 exam centres had big electricity problems, some for almost an hour. Ujjain also had issues in six centres, with power cuts for about 40–45 minutes. Some students told the court they had to write parts of the exam using torchlight or in very dim light. Many said they lost important time and felt a lot of stress. To show how bad it was, the judge even made the courtroom dark and said exam centres do not have big windows like courts, so they had very little natural light.
The NTA (exam authority) said students from those centres answered almost the same number of questions as others, and 11 students from Indore scored more than 600 marks. But the court said this does not make the situation fair. The court agreed that the power cuts caused mental and physical problems for students and said they should get a fair chance with a fresh exam.

Earlier, on May 15, the High Court stopped the results for students from 11 affected centres in Indore. Later, it allowed NTA to release results for all other students. Now, with this new decision, the court said that the results and counselling for these petitioners will depend on how they perform in the re-test. The NTA has been told to organise this re-test. Very important: this benefit will not apply to students who filed their petitions after June 3.
Experts say this decision is a big step to make national entrance exams fair and transparent. It comes at a time when there are many concerns about how exams are conducted, technical problems, and student welfare. Legal experts also think this judgment could affect how exam complaints are handled in the future.
