NEET UG 2026 OMR Case

NEET UG 2026 OMR Case

NEET UG 2026: Supreme Court has agreed to hear a plea challenging OMR answer sheet in National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test Undergraduate (NEET UG) 2026 exam on an urgent basis. This matter will be heard tomorrow on October 15, after petitioner raised concerns that National Testing Agency (NTA) may destroy original examination records after prescribed 90-day retention period.

As per media reports, the plea was mentioned before Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi today on October 14. The petitioner's counsel requested an early hearing, stating that original NEET UG examination records needed to be preserved before retention deadline expired.

Chief Justice initially indicated that the matter could be listed on Friday. However, after counsel highlighted urgency of this issue, the court agreed to schedule hearing for Thursday, October 15, before a bench led by Justice PS Narasimha.

NEET UG 2026 Candidate Challenges OMR Sheet After Gujarat High Court Setback

The case concerns a candidate who has challenged their NEET UG 2026 OMR answer sheet and is looking for judicial intervention. During proceedings, Supreme Court bench asked petitioner's counsel about timeline of this case, including when NEET UG was held and when legal challenge was filed.

In response, the counsel informed the court that the candidate had already pursued legal remedies before approaching Supreme Court. The petitioner's intra-court appeal was dismissed by a Division Bench of the Gujarat High Court on October 12. Following this setback, the candidate approached Supreme Court for further relief. The petitioner is seeking consideration of OMR sheet dispute, with immediate concern being possible destruction of original examination records.

Why is NTA Record Retention Deadline Important?

The petitioner has argued that approaching 90-day retention deadline could affect case if original examination records are destroyed before the dispute is examined by the court. Original OMR sheets and other exam records may be important in resolving disputes related to candidates' recorded responses and the evaluation process. If relevant documents are no longer available, it could become more difficult to examine the candidate's claims.

What Happens Next in NEET UG 2026 OMR Case?

Supreme Court is scheduled to hear this matter tomorrow on October 15. During this hearing, the court will have an opportunity to consider petitioner's submissions and concerns raised about availability of original examination records. However, decision to list case urgently does not mean that Supreme Court has accepted the candidate's allegations or ruled that OMR answer sheet contains an error. The merits of the dispute remain to be examined.

Commonly asked questions
Q:   If I opt to participate in second round of NEET UG counseling, will my allotted seat of first round be cancelled?
A:

In case candidates are not allotted any seat in the second round of the NEET UG counselling, the earlier allotted seat in Round 1 will be retained. However, on up-gradation of a seat in the second round, the earlier allotted seat in Round 1 will automatically be cancelled and allotted to another candidate. Therefore, candidates are advised to fill in only higher choices or any other choice which they prefer over the earlier allotted seat, for second round.

Q:   What is the significance of the NEET seat matrix?
A:

Seat matrix for NEET counselling is important for choice filling process. Before filling and locking seat choices for each round of NEET counselling, candidates must go through seat matrix or seat vacancy and then enter their choices. MCC releases seat matrix prior to commencement of counselling process. This is overall seat matrix for all four rounds of counselling. Candidates participating in Round 1 NEET counselling will have to choose from entire gamut of seats. From second round onwards, seat matrix is released in terms of newly added seats and clear and virtual vacancies. With each round of counselling, number of available seats or vacant seats reduces.

Q:   When will MCC NEET round 1 choice filling 2026 window open?
A:

The MCC NEET round 1 choice filling 2026 window was open from August 7 to 18, 2026. Candidates could submit their choices based on the seat matrix.
