Russia-Ukraine War: PM Modi speaks to Putin, Expresses concern around safety of Indians

Prime Minister Narendra Modi last night spoke with the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin and expressed his concern regarding the safety of Indian citizens, especially students in Ukraine. PM Modi conveyed that India attaches the highest priority to their safe exit and return to India.
On Thursday Russia launched a military operation in Ukraine in which over 100 people including civilians are already dead and Russian forces have entered various parts of Ukraine. The international community has expressed their concern and have urged Russia to end the war immediately.
Thousands of Indians, including students, are currently stranded in various parts of Ukraine including its capital Kyiv as air services have been stalled.
As per a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), Russian President Putin briefed PM Modi about the recent developments regarding Ukraine. During his call with the Russian President, PM Modi reiterated his long-standing conviction that the differences between Russia and the NATO group can only be resolved through honest and sincere dialogue.
PM Modi appealed for an immediate cessation of violence and called for concerted efforts from all sides to return to the path of diplomatic negotiations and dialogue.
Narendra Modi also sensitised the Russian President about India's concerns regarding the safety of the Indian citizens in Ukraine, especially students. “PM Modi conveyed that India attaches the highest priority to their safe exit and return to India. The leaders agreed that their officials and diplomatic teams would continue to maintain regular contacts on issues of topical interest,” states the PMO statement.
Indian Embassy in Kyiv has been issuing advisory from time to time and has also reached out to the Indian Diaspora and have requested them to assist Indians to the best of their abilities.
Indian ambassador, Partha Satpathy has appealed to Indian students who are stranded in Kyiv, to get in touch with their friends and colleagues in Kyiv, universities and other community members, so that they can temporarily lodge there.
In the morning Indian Embassy issued a statement asking Indians to not travel to Kyiv and remain wherever they are. Ambassador in his message has stated: “The situation is highly tense and very uncertain and this, of course, is causing a lot of anxiety. The air space is closed, railway schedules are in flux and roads are crammed. I would request everyone to stay calm and face the situation with fortitude.”
