Union Cabinet has approved expansion of postgraduate( PG) and undergraduate (MBBS) medical education capacity in the country.

Union Cabinet has approved increase in MBBS and PG seats in medical colleges in India. The decision to increase 5000 PG seats and over 5000 MBBS seats have been taken under the Phase-Ill of the Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS) for strengthening and upgradation of existing State Government or Central Government Medical Colleges, PG Institutes.

The Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister, Narendra Modi has approved 5,000 Post-Graduate seats and extension of the CSS for upgradation of existing government medical colleges with an increase of 5,023 MBBS seats.

As per a release issued by the PIB, this initiative will improve the undergraduate medical capacity; increase availability of specialist doctors by creating additional postgraduate seats; and enable introduction of new specialties across Government medical institutions.

The total financial implications of these two schemes will be Rs.15,034.50 crore for a period from 2025-26 to 2028-29. The central share will be Rs.10,303.20 crore and the state share is Rs.4731.30 crore.

It states that the schemes for augmenting medical seats in government medical colleges across states and Union Territories (UTs) will help augment the availability of doctors and specialists in the country, thereby improving access to quality healthcare, especially in underserved areas.

The target of these schemes is to increase 5000 PG seats and 5023 UG seats in government institutions by 2028-2029. Detailed guidelines will be issued by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MoH&FW) for implementation of the schemes.

MBBS Seats in India

As on date, India has 808 medical colleges, highest amongst the world with total intake capacity of 1,23,700 MBBS seats. “In the last one decade, added over 69,352 new MBBS seats registering a growth of 127%. Similarly, during this period 43,041 PG seats were added showing an impressive growth of 143%,” reads PIB statement.

 

Q:   Can I get MBBS admission with a 300 score in NEET?
A:

It is possible to get admission to a private medical college with a score of 300 in NEET. For a government medical college, one should ideally obtain a score above 600. The NEET cutoff for the Government medical colleges varies as per the institute rank and round of counselling. Hence, it can be said that a score of 300 in NEET may not be sufficient for admission to Government medical colleges. As per past years' trends, a score between 500 to 700 or above is in the cutoff marks for NEET. 

Q:   How many seats are available in NEET PG?
A:

NEET PG exam is conducted for admission to 26,168 Doctor of Medicine (MD), 13,649 Master of Surgery (MS) and 922 PG Diploma in 6,102 government, private, deemed/central universities. Candidates have to appear in the exam and qualify it with the minimum cut off marks as per the category. Thereafter, he/she will have to participate in the counselling process for seat allocation. Candidates have to register on the official website and declare choice for college and course for NEET PG counselling process. Seats are allotted based on choice declared, NEET PG rank, available seats, reservation fcator etc.

Q:   How much time is provided to join allotted college after seat allocation?
A:

For every counselling round, reporting deadline is provided in the counselling schedule. Candidates can submit fees and report till the given deadline. Though candidates can report till last day, but they are advised to report before the deadline due to different schedule of holiday/working hours in various Medical Colleges/Institutes. Also they are advised to carry all original certificates and documents during reporting.
