Odisha School Reopening: The Odisha State Government decided to roll-back its decision to reopen schools in November. According to the latest reports, the state government of Odisha decided to keep the schools closed until December 31, 2020. The decision to keep schools closed until the end of the year is taken by the state government keeping in mind the fears around the rise of the 2nd Wave of COVID-19 infections in the country. With the latest announcement by the School Education Department of the State Government, Odisha became the first state in the country to announce the closure of the schools for the entire year since the start of lockdown in March 2021 due to the ongoing pandemic situation.

As the reports suggested earlier, the state government planned to reopen schools in Odisha for Class 9 to 12 students from November 2020 onwards. However, recently it decided to keep the decision on hold and on Friday, i.e. November 6, 2020, rolled it back, stating that schools will remain closed for the remainder of the year i.e. until December 31, 2020. The decision to keep schools closed is taken keeping in mind the fears and apprehensions expressed by the experts and various stakeholders about the possible 2nd Wave of COVID-19 infections in the country. With experts predicting a second wave in mid-December, the Odisha Government announced its decision to err on the side of caution and keep the schools closed.

Announcing the decision, Satyabrata Sahoo, S&ME secretary also held consultations with various stakeholders and considered their inputs before arriving at the decision. He further added that the experience of other states that had reopened schools was also considered before making the decision. Earlier School and Mass Education Minister of the state Samir Ranjan Dash has clarified that said that the state will not open schools for the students of class 8 to 12 from November 15 as was decided earlier.
