Union Public Service Commission has released time table for Indian Engineering Services (IES) preliminary exam 2026. As per schedule, UPSC IES Prelims will be held on Sunday, February 8, 2026, across various exam centres in India. The IES prelims exam will be conducted in two sessions: morning and afternoon. UPSC IES prelims exam will be held for engineering disciplines including Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics, and Telecommunications Engineering. UPSC will also release detailed instructions regarding IES exam day guidelines, allowed materials, and reporting time closer to exam date.

Candidates who qualify in UPSC IES prelims exam will be eligible to appear for mains exam, followed by Personality Test (Interview). Indian Engineering Services, also known as the Engineering Services Examination (ESE) aims to recruit engineers for technical positions in various departments of Government of India such as Railways, Power, Defence, and Telecommunications.
The Engineering Service (IES) prelims exam is conducted across the nation at the designated exam centres. The Commission allot the IES exam centres on first-apply basis and there is no discretion of the candidates over the allotment of the exam centre. The candidates can not request the change in the IES exam centre as the Union Public Service Commission does not consider such requests.
In the matter of exam date, it is impossible to request a change in exam date because the exam is conducted at all India level in the offline mode and it is conducted as per the dates mentioned in the official exam calendar.
There is no specific dress code mentioned for the IES exam but the candidates are suggested to wear comfortable attire for the exam. The candidates should track the weather conditions and wear the clothes accordingly. The candidates are required to wear clothes which can be handled easily while travelling and sitting during the exam.

The Engineering Services (Preliminary) Examination will consist of two objective type (multiple choices) questions papers and carrying a maximum of 500 marks.
Paper I: 200 Marks
Paper II: 300 Marks.
Each correct answer is awarded two marks. One-third marks deducted for each wrong answers.
Only those candidates who are declared by the Commission to have qualified in the Preliminary Examination in the year will be eligible for admission to the Mains Examination. The Marks obtained in Preliminary Examination by the candidates who are declared qualified for admission to the Main Examination will be counted for determining their final order of merit.
