DU Students Protest

Delhi University students hold a protest in the university's north campus on Tuesday, demanding the immediate implementation of the UGC Equity Regulations 2026. The demonstration, allegedly organised by the All India Students’ Association (AISA), witnessed hundreds of students carrying placards and raising slogans in favour of UGC 2026 Equity regulation. It aimed to protest the recent Supreme Court stay on these guidelines.

The protesters argued that the Apex Court’s stay on the Promotion of Equity in Higher Education Institutions Regulations, 2026, is nullifying the efforts to overcome caste based discrimination in universities. Chanting slogans and carrying placards, students highlighted that these rules are the safeguards for students from the Scheduled Castes (SC), the Scheduled Tribes (ST), and the Other Backwards Classes (OBC).

DU Students Protest for UGC Equity Regulations: Key Areas of Controversy

The following are highlights of the protest against the UGC Equity in Higher Education Institutions Regulations, 2026:

General Category Exclusion: Critics argue that the definition of "caste-based discrimination" is specifically for SC/ST/OBC groups and excludes General Category students.

Prone to Misuse: A clause from the 2025 draft that penalised false or malicious complaints was removed in the final version, sparking fears of misuse.

Supreme Court Stay: On January 29, 2026, the Supreme Court put a stay on these regulations, considering them vague. The 2012 UGC equity regulations remain in force until the next update.
