Most of the names in the list of the fake universities as declared by UGC are from Uttar Pradesh. 

The University Grants Commission (UGC) on Wednesday, Oct 7, 2020, declared 24 universities as FAKE! According to the reports, the Commission announced a list of 24 "self-styled, unrecognised institutions" in the country, terming them as "fake" with the maximum of them operating from Uttar Pradesh followed by Delhi.

"Students and public are informed that currently 24 self-styled, unrecognised institutions are functioning in contravention of the UGC Act, which have been declared as fake universities and these are not empowered to confer any degree," UGC Secretary Rajnish Jain said according to media reports.

According to the information released by the UGC, eight of these universities are from Uttar Pradesh, seven are from Delhi, and two each from Odisha and West Bengal. Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Puducherry and Maharashtra have one such fake university each. The 24 universities that have been declared fake by UGC include United Nations University, Delhi; Vocational University, Delhi; Raja Arabic University, Nagpur; Indian Institute of Alternative Medicine, Kolkata; and Gandhi Hindi Vidyapith, Prayag.

The sudden declaration came as a shock for students who are already studying in these 24 universities or have enrolled themselves in the same. Earlier. the University Grants Commission (UGC) warned students against taking admission in the National Institute of Management Solutions (NIMS) located in Janakpuri, New Delhi. The regulator said that NIMS is not a university and is not recognised by the UGC to offer any ‘Bachelor/Master programme’ either through regular or distance modes.
