Integrated M.SC VS B.Sc + M.SC: Courses and Admission Differences
Master degree in science is obtained through integrated M.Sc and B.Sc + M.Sc. Both the degrees will help you get a master degree in science as per your chosen subjects. There is a difference between courses, fees and admission process. Read to know more.
Â
Integrated M.Sc vs B.Sc + M.Sc both gives you a post graduate degree in science. The real differences are the time it takes, the number of entrance exams, the courses, admission differences and how easily you can change your mind, and the cost.
Once Class 12 science is done, most students think of a BSc as the obvious next step. But there is another way to reach a master's degree: the five-year Integrated MSc. You join once after Class 12 and come out with an MSc. With the usual route, you finish a BSc first and then apply again for an MSc.

What Is an Integrated MSc?
An Integrated MSc is a five-year, ten-semester course that you start right after Class 12. The BSc and MSc parts are joined into one programme, with one admission and one institute for all five years. The usual subjects are Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Biology. Some universities add Biotechnology, Data Science and Geology.
The name changes from place to place. IISERs call it a BS-MS dual degree, and some universities call it Integrated BSc-MSc. The idea is the same. Well-known names include:
- NISER Bhubaneswar
- UM-DAE CEBS Mumbai
- Seven IISERs
- University of Hyderabad
- DTU
- VIT
What Is BSc + MSc?
This is the traditional path. A BSc usually takes three years, though many universities now offer a four-year honours BSc under NEP 2020. The MSc then takes two years after a three-year BSc, or one year after a four-year honours degree with the required marks. These are two separate admissions, so a BSc seat does not guarantee an MSc seat in the same university.
The Two Courses Comparison
| Topic | Integrated M.Sc | B.SC+M.SC |
| Stars | After Class 12 Â |
BSc after Class 12, MSc after graduation |
| Duration | 5 years | 3 + 2 years, or 4 + 1 under NEP |
| Admission | One | Two |
| Entrance Exam | One, after Class 12 | One for BSc (often), another for MSc |
| Flexibility | Low; subject and institute are fixed | High; you can switch at the MSc stage |
| Research Exposure | Often starts early | Mostly from the MSc stage |
The Difference Between Integrated M.Sc vs B.Sc + M.Sc
Integrated MSc. : The first years cover basics across subjects, so a physics student also studies maths and chemistry. Specialisation usually starts around the fifth or sixth semester, though it differs by university. The last year or two bring advanced papers, lab work or an internship, and a dissertation. NISER and CEBS say their programme includes research exposure from the start, and most of their graduates go on to a PhD in India or abroad.
BSc + MSc. : The BSc builds your base with core papers, practicals and electives, and you specialise only at the MSc stage. Because the degrees are separate, you can change direction. A chemistry graduate, for instance, might go for an MSc in biochemistry, if the target university accepts that background.
NEP 2020 has made the two routes look more alike. It allows three or four-year degrees with exit points after year one (certificate), year two (diploma) and year three (degree), and it mentions an integrated five-year programme.Â
How To Get Into An Integrated MSc?
The student needs to pass Class 12 with science from a recognised board, with 50 to 60% marks and the required subjects. The selection of Integrated MSc depends on the institute as per the policy.Â
NEST (NISER and CEBS): In 2027, you need 60% in Class 12 (55% for SC, ST and PwD) and at least three of the four subjects: Biology, Chemistry, Maths and Physics in Classes 11 and 12. There is no upper age limit. The computer-based test is usually held in June, and results come in at the end. The seat numbers varied in different colleges. The application fee is approximately ₹1,400 for male unreserved and OBC candidates and ₹700 for others.
IISER Aptitude Test (IAT). This is the single door to BS-MS at the IISERs. In 2027, admission is based only on IAT scores, with the exam in June, and the same 60% (55% reserved) marks rule.
CUET UG: The University of Hyderabad releases applications in July for its 17 integrated PG programmes from CUET UG candidates, including integrated MSc in Mathematical Sciences, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. DTU will also use CUET UG for its integrated BSc-MSc in 2027-28.
These dates and numbers are tentative for the 2027 session. Check the brochures when the notice comes out.

How to Get Into BSc + MSc?
This is a two-step process. For the BSc, most central and many state universities use CUET UG, while others go by Class 12 marks or their own test. For the MSc, you usually choose from these:
IIT JAM : You can apply with a bachelor's degree or in your final year, with no age limit. Each institute sets its own subject requirements. JAM 2027 will be conducted in February, and qualifying does not guarantee a seat.
CUET PG: Run by NTA for central and several other universities. The 2026 exam is scheduled for March. There is no upper age limit, but each university adds its own subject and marks conditions.
University tests or merit lists. Many universities hold their own test, especially for seats left after CUET PG. So a BSc + MSc student may face entrance exams twice, a few years apart. An integrated student faces just one.
Fees and Scholarships
Fees depend more on the type of institute than on the route. For BSc + MSc, add both degrees' fees before comparing. At a government college this can be low. At a private one, it can match or beat an integrated course. Check the fees on their official websites while applying for the different courses.
Integrated MSc vs BSc + MSc: What to Choose?
An Integrated MSc is best suited if the candidate has a fair knowledge of the subject and lean towards research or a PhD. If the student wants one admission instead of two, and can get into a strong institute this is the best choice.
BSc + MSc suits those if you are unsure about your specialisation, want to change subject or university later, may want to work after three years, or plan to use JAM or CUET PG to reach a top MSc from a modest BSc college.
Seats at NISER and the IISERs are few and competition is tough. Many students take the BSc + MSc route and still reach excellent MSc programmes through JAM.
