All India Food Processors’ Association (AIFPA) organised a National Workshop on "Food Safety & Standards Act - The Step Forward" today, in association with Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MFPI) and Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). The day long workshop inaugurated by the Mr. P.I. Suvrathan, Chairperson-
FSSAI, highlighted the problems faced by Food Industry and the need of consolidation of food laws. Vital aspects concerning Labelling, Claims & Proprietary Foods, Food Additives and Food Safety Management Systems, Licensing & Registration of Food Business were also discussed in the workshop.
The workshop witnessed participation from more than 175 representatives of Food Processing Industries from different parts of the country. Some of the eminent industry leaders present were ITC Foods, Pepsi Foods, Coca Cola, Haldirams, National Institute of Nutrition, Quality Council of India, Mc Rennet Foods, Intertek, Defence research Laboratory, Nestle India, Exports Inspection Council etc.
“There are wide variations in agricultural practices and deficiencies such as residues of pesticides and veterinary drugs which affect the farm produce. The regulations should be conducive enough to encourage improvement in these systems so that production of food is of the desired quality” said Mr. Piruz Khambatta, President AIFPA. “The FSSAI has the challenging task of motivating improvements and develop sufficient awareness regarding the quality and safety of food. Procedures should be installed for risk assessment and measures should be adopted for effective control of food safety concerns”, he added.
The Food Safety and Standards Act 2006 was enacted to lay down comprehensive science based standards for articles of food and food products to ensure their safety and quality. It is a big step forward as the occasion had come to consolidate the Food Regulations which were spread over in various Acts and Orders. FSSAI established under this Act has the mandate to define the Rules & Regulations required to implement the provisions of the Act and to set up the necessary system to meet the above objectives. It is important that regulations are sensitive to recognise ground realities, are clear in formulation and are transparent in implementation.
