The Centre for World-Class Universities at Shanghai Jiao Tong University released its ranking of tertiary institutions across the globe – the 2013 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU). And yet again, Indian institutions have failed to reach the mark. Not a single Indian institute or university made it to the near vicinity of the Top 100.

Only one institute – Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore – made it to the list, ranking between 301-400. While the best-ranked universities in the Asia-Pacific region are the University of Tokyo (Rank 21) and Kyoto University (Rank 26) in Japan, and the University of Melbourne (Rank 56) in Australia.

Early this year, both Times Higher Education (TIE) and Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) released their global university rankings. And in both the rankings, no Indian university made it to the top spots.

To improve their world rankings, directors of various IITs and NITs are planning to hold talks with ranking organisations and improve their global position. Meanwhile, AICTE has also decided to internationalise CMAT in an effort to improve international rankings.
