Study the mystery of ‘God Particle’ in 7 weeks
Want to learn about the mysteries behind of Higgs boson or 'God particle'? Well, here’s your golden chance.
University of Edinburgh is offering an online course – ' The Discovery of the Higgs boson' – as its first Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) via the FutureLearn platform.
The seven-week course starting February 10, will study the work of Professor Peter Higgs, the scientist behind the Higgs boson or 'God particle'.
It will consist of feature interviews with Higgs and filmed lectures by a team of world-class physicists at the University of Edinburgh. Students can then debate what they have seen using dedicated online discussion spaces and social media, informed an official release. The course will further describe the scientific advancements that have led to the building of the Large Hadron Collider in Switzerland, and to the detection of the boson. It highlights the cross-fertilisation between theory and experiment in particle physics during the past 100 years.
FutureLearn is a partnership of 23 leading universities, together with the British Museum, British Council and British Library, which gives learners the opportunity to access high quality courses for free.
Course requirements
The course requires a basic level of mathematical skills, at the level of a final-year school pupil. A basic knowledge of physics is helpful, but not required.
