Your TOEFL score is your actual marks (like 90 out of 120). Your TOEFL score percentile tells how many people you scored better than.

TOEFL percentile shows how your TOEFL score compares with other test takers. If your percentile is 80, it means you did better than 80% of people who gave the test.

In the TOEFL Listening section, your score tells how well you understand English. If you get 22 to 30, you are Advanced. 17 to 21 is High-Intermediate. 9 to 16 is Low-Intermediate. 0 to 8 is Below Basic. Higher score means better listening skills.

Your TOEFL score is valid for 2 years from your test date. After 2 years, it expires, and you need to take test again.

The total score is 120. Each of the four sections: Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing. This is scored from 0 to 30. If you get 20 in each, your total is 80. Most good universities ask for 90+ or 100+.

It depends on how the school gets the score:

  • If school uses ETS Data Manager (online) – they get score in 4 to 8 business days
  • If school uses server-to-server – they get it in about 8 to 10 business days
  • If scores are sent by postal mail – it takes about 10 to 12 business days, then extra time for mailing (maybe 7 to 10 days in USA, or 3 to 5 weeks in other countries)
