If we consider opting for research through GATE, then GATE Physics is ideal for careers in ISRO, BARC, DRDO, and other PhD-level research in theoretical and applied sciences.
On the other hand, the GATE CS is better for job-based roles, such as AI and ML, computational research and systems. However, if you are solely looking for research through GATE, then choose Physics for academics/research careers, and CS for applied computing and tech research.

Coaching isn't mandatory for GATE preparation, though it helps in getting mentorship and accessible tools and study materials. However, many GATE toppers crack the exam through self-study using online resources and their standard books. If you are disciplined and clear with basics, coaching might not be necessary.

Here are some of the best resources that can help in the GATE preparation -
- Standard text books and lecture notes
- Previous year's GATE question papers
- Mock tests (can be found in the GATE's 2026 official website)
- Video lessons and test series
Restrict following multiple resources as these can cause brain fog and confusion. Maintain a structured schedule to track your errors while solving questions. Revise multiple times.

Ideally, it is better to start preparing for GATE 2026 at least 10 to 12 months before the exam. Starting early will help students to cover the syllabus, revise, and practice mock tests.
In case, you are starting late, then maintain a focused, accelerated schedule with daily goals and stick to essential topics with high weightage.
