Establishment

The Government of India's Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) established PEC in 1984 as a public institution to meet the engineering needs of the Union Territory of Puducherry. 

Upgraded to a university

In 2020, PEC was upgraded to university status and became the Puducherry Technological University (PTU). PTU is a public technical and research university under the central government and MHRD. 

Ranking

PEC is consistently recognised as one of the top engineering institutes in India by national and international ranking agencies. In the 2024 NIRF rankings, PEC was ranked #201-300 in the Engineering category.
