According to the final report compiled by the Directorate of Sports and Youth Services, almost double the number of Class 10 students, got 25 extra marks for sports this year compared to last year. This happened at a time when the government is working on a revised sports marks scheme aiming at excluding undeserving beneficiaries.

In 2010, 1,296 students in Class 10 benefited from the scheme -that grants 25 extra marks to those who played sport at the state level and above. In 2011, 2,484 students benefited from it. Compared to 2009, when 854 students were awarded extra marks, this year the increase was witnessed three fold.

According to Mr. Narendra Sopal, Director of Sports and Youth Services (State), the reason behind rising figures is that the awareness of the scheme has improved considerably.

According to a senior official, numerous so-called associations have come up with teams, comprising entirely of students from Class 10 and 12.

In order to check these practices the Education Department and the Sports and Youth Welfare Department is planning to sit together and chalk out fresh scheme in forthcoming months. Also, there are chances that a new and revised scheme will be provided for the next academic year.
