Hyderabad: A record 150 school teams participated in IGNITE 2011, a multi-city, inter-school quiz contest organised by the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) at Birla Planitarium in the city.

P. Susant and Ishtmeet Singh of Delhi Public School-Hyderabad lifted the trophy while Vasishta P. and Aakash P. of Gitanjali Senior School were the runners-up in the event which was attended by over 150 teams representing various city schools.

Some of the questions, posed by the quizmaster Adittya Mobayi of Quizcraft, were answered without much difficulty by the participating teams, but some made the participants think hard.

The auditorium was full to capacity with students cheering their school teams with loud clapping and shouts.

Addressing the students, Chief Guest Dr B. Rajagopal, Regional Director of IGNOU said that the idea of such events is to ignite students' interest in higher education and make them aware of the Open and Distance Learning System.

"IGNOU has an active student enrollment of nearly 4 million now, thus contributing significantly towards the National Skills Mission in the Decade of Innovation," Dr Rajagopal added.

The quiz started with a written elimination round of 20 questions in which all the students present in the hall were asked to participate. Out of these, six teams were selected for the next and final round. All the teams had been asked to give themselves a team name. The final contest comprised of six rounds of questions, including one round on music and another on visuals.

A few questions were put to the audience and those who gave correct answers were also rewarded with prizes. The winners got individual trophies, a trophy for their school, book vouchers and a gift hamper each while the runners-up got individual trophies, book vouchers and a gift hamper.

A panel exhibition and a flash presentation were also organised to make the students aware of various programmes being offered by IGNOU.

Hyderabad was the ninth city where IGNITE 2011 was organised. Before this, the quiz contest was held in Delhi, Kolkata, Guwahati, Bangalore, Kochi, Ahmedabad, Chandigarh and Jammu.

IGNITE 2011 will be held in some other cities before the grand finale of the winning teams in Delhi.

IGNOU is the one of the largest universities in the world by enrollment with over three million students on its rolls. Starting with two courses and 4,000 students in 1985, IGNOU has evolved into the world's largest, most diverse and inclusive institution, offering over 450 programmes.
