Offbeat courses at IGNOU
Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) offers plenty of career opportunities to its students through diverse offbeat courses. Be it a course on power distribution or a certificate program in Beekeeping, the institute offers it all under its ambit.
To begin with, below mentioned are certificate courses pertaining to Indian performing arts. The university has started inviting applications for these courses:
- Certificate in Performing Arts- Theatre Arts (CPATHA): This program aims to introduce the art of theatre to the learners, provide basic training in theatre and provide theatre appreciation to enthusiasts.
- Certificate in Performing Arts- Hindustani Music (CPAHM): Through this program students will receive basic knowledge of theory and practical aspects of Hindutani music.
- Certificate in Performing Arts-Karnatak Music (CPAKM): Thisprogramaims to prepare students with a holistic and integrated approach towards various Indian art forms i.e. music, dance, theatre and visual art.
- Certificate in Performing Arts- Bharatnatyam (CPABN)
- Certificate in Performing Arts- Kathak (CPAKT)
Through the CPABN and CPAKT programs, students acquire training in the basics of Bharatnatyam and Kathak, respectively. These one of a kind programs merge the strength of both the University and its study centres which are reputed Bharatanatyam and Kathak dance schools located across the country.

Another interesting course that IGNOU offers is a post graduate diploma in book publishing. This year long program is apt for individuals aspiring for a career in the field of publishing. This unique program lays emphasis on upcoming technologies in book publishing. Students would gain an opportunity to obtain specialization in editing books for children, scientific, technical & medical books and text books. Subsequently, the University, in collaboration with Footwear Design and Development Institute (FDDI), also offers various courses in footwear technology. It was only last year that the university launched five undergraduate and three postgraduate full-time courses in the field of footwear, leather and other allied products. Besides opening new gateways for students, these programs will facilitate the production of trained man power for export oriented industries functioning in the same field. (Read more)
The University also offers a six-month certificate program in Beekeeping. Offered in partnership with the IGNOU Regional Centre, Shillong (Meghalaya) through Educational Development of North East Region Unit (EDNERU), the program would endow the learners with scientific knowledge and technical skills in all aspects of beekeeping.
